Is the freedom of speech being pushed too far?

Nearly everybody has read them. They are everywhere. But are they true? Of course I am talking about tabloids. You know, those supposedly "true" magazines that lure you in with their unbelievable headlines. Now, everyone knows that they are not true, but where do these stories come from? To be truthful, these writers pull these stories out of their guilty butts.
On this site, I have pushed the envelope between informative and rude. Not to say that any of my articles are not informative, it's just that there is a lot of opinion in them. So, instead of calling them news, let's call them editorials.
Now, we all know that in America, we have freedom of the press. It's in our constitution. Summarized it states that anything may be posted as long as it is true. If this is so, aren't those tabloids performing illegal acts? The truth is they are. But they publish so many about the same people that those people do not have the time or reputation to waste over frivilous lawsuits. It would, flat out, ruin their image.
So, we have the freedom, and just that. We have nothing more and nothing less. We have all gossipped. There's no doubt about that. Yet, when we put that gossip, more specifically untruthful gossip, into the public press, that is when we've crossed a line between intriguing and rude.
