There is no doubt that with the war in Iraq, oil prices, and national debt that there is no shortage of poilitical issues
floating about. The most controversial of those issues, however, is most definitely gay marriage.
I've tried to stay away from the topic for a while because of its nature. But, today, I am opening the curtain into a
world of discrimination that is, in many cases, hidden from plain view. So, like the elephant in the room it is, it's time
to acknowledge that the problem is there. So, here it goes:
It is fact that the majority of the country opposes homsexual marriage. Many of those people do so for religious reasons.
They claim that the bible states that marriage is a union between a man and a woman (and a man and a woman only). And, it
clearly does. But the Bible also says many other things, most of which are not pertinent to this day in age.
For instance, the book of Leviticus has the most absurdities of them all. For instance, it states that animal sacrifice
os completely right and proper. And, in doing so, once the animal is killed, the blood must be sprinkled around the head of
the animal. I don't know about you, but I can't remember the last time my church had a ritualistic animal sacrifice.
Now, no one is perfect. I'm certainly not perfect, you, who is readin this, is not perfect, and no one can follow any
of the rules in the Bible to a "T". Granted, Leviticus does state that "Thou shalt not lie with mankind as
with womankind, it is abomination," but if no one else is able to completely follow the rules laid down by the Bible,
why should homosexuals?
Also, the question arises of whether they have a choice to be the way they are or not. I, personally, think they do not.
You don't agree with me? Well, let me lend you this analogy: let's say I like the color green (which I do). I didn't choose
to like the color green, I just do. In my opinion, sexual orientation is the exact same way.
In my opinion, every culture has to have someone to push around so that they feel better about themselves. My great-grandparents
had women coming into the workplace, and my grandparents had the African American integration. Homosexual marriage is no different
than those. These people are no different than anybody else, other than their orientation. They are US citizens, they pay
taxes, they raise families, and have feelings.
Therefore, these people should not be denied the right of marriage simply because a group of people with power don't like
the idea. If you remember, Congress thought slavery was a good idea, too, and look what happened with that.
So, we may not like the idea, but people they are: homosexuals are people with the same unalienable rights like you and
I. Thus, they deserve the same protection under the law that you and I get. We may not like it, no, but it isn't right, and
it isn't proper to deny regular people from being treated like humans. American is a land of freedom, regardless of who you
are.
